In the heart of the Lavreotiki peninsula and the National Park of Sounion lie the shafts, galleries, and ore-washing workshops of the ancient silver mines.

For safety reasons, walkers should always remain on designated paths. Within the fenced archaeological site of Forest Area I, visitors can explore a large complex of ore-washing facilities (plintiria). These impressive remains showcase the advanced technology of the time, which used water recycling to maximize silver and lead yield during the smelting process.

Following the open trail of Forest Area II, visitors gain a sense of the vast scale of these installations. It was with silver from Lavrio that the Athenian fleet was built – the fleet that defeated the Persians at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC.
