But how had it survived the passage of time to reach us virtually unscathed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standing 2.48 metres tall and unearthed on November 24, 2000, the Kore of Thera was reintroduced to the public twenty-four years later in the exhibition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kykladitisses: Untold stories of women in the Cyclades<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the first pan-Cycladic exhibition to narrate the history of the islands through the lives of their women. Organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Museum of Cycladic Art, the exhibition opened in Athens in December 2024 before travelling, in June 2025, to the newly renovated <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hh.gr\/en\/destinations\/thera-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archaeological Museum of Thera<\/a><\/strong>, bringing the Kore back to her ancestral home.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"section EmphasisText  \">\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"rich-text\">\n\t\t<p>The gleaming white Kore of Thera is the signature masterpiece of the new Archaeological Museum of Thera. She continues not only to captivate visitors, but also to remind us that sometimes something as simple as a heavy rainstorm is enough to reveal extraordinary wonders before our eyes.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"section ContentText TitleCenter  \">\n\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"rich-text\">\n\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are countless theories about her mysterious origins. Carved from brilliant white Naxian marble and bearing only two imperfections &#8211; the loss of her right arm, from the upper arm to the wrist, and a small chip on her nose &#8211; the imposing statue is one of the very few surviving examples of early Greek monumental stone sculpture to have been preserved almost intact. Slender, with an exceptionally narrow waist and remarkably neutral facial features, she possesses a certain ambiguity. Another suggestion was that it had been interred after the establishment of democracy in Athens, when lavish aristocratic monuments were no longer considered appropriate. In all likelihood, however, neither explanation is correct.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"section galleryBlock \">\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\t\t\n<div lying down from a workshop on Naxos, fell and broke her arm some 250 metres from the harbour after her arrival on Thera. Since the damage was likely impossible to repair, the statue was never erected at its intended destination and was instead buried in the nearby cemetery as a sacred object. This theory is supported by the complete absence of traces of paint, since ancient sculptures were invariably painted only after they had been installed in their final position. Moreover, certain finishing details that would normally have been carved immediately before the unveiling were never completed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the gleaming white Kore of Thera &#8211; up until recently one of the great mysteries of Greek archaeology &#8211; is the signature masterpiece of the new Archaeological Museum of Thera.
