The archaeological site of the Kaisariani Monastery is located on the wooded western slope of Mount Hymettus. Its main monument is the Byzantine Monastery of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, founded in the late 11th or early 12th century.
A short walk through the forest brings visitors to other sites of interest. On the Hill of the Taxiarches, about 400 meters west of the monastery, stand monuments spanning from the early Christian period to the Ottoman era: the remains of an early Christian basilica and a Byzantine church, the Frankish Church of Saint Mark, and the Church of the Taxiarches. Around 200 meters south of the monastery is the Holy Spring of the Ascension, while farther uphill, approximately 1,500 meters to the northeast, lies the Monastery of Asteri.
Within the fortified walls of the Monastery of the Presentation, the structures narrate the story of its long history. The church (katholikon) and the bathhouse date back to its foundation, while the refectory, storerooms, and monks’ cells are arranged at different levels around a serene courtyard. Particularly noteworthy is the Benizelos family Tower, built by the noble Athenian household that, in 1682, funded the frescoes decorating the narthex added to the katholikon.
The monks cultivated olive trees and kept beehives, ensuring the monastery’s financial independence. It was an important spiritual center, possessing a library with a large number of manuscripts. The monastery began to decline in the 18th century, and its operation ceased in 1833 by decree of King Otto’s Regency.
